چکیده

This paper experimentally shows the importance of perceptual continuity of the expressive strength in vocal timbre for natural change in vocal expression. In order to synthesize various and continuous expressive strengths with vocal timbre, we investigated gradually changing expressions by applying the STRAIGHT speech-morphing algorithm to singing voices. Here, a singing voice without expression is used as the base of morphing, and singing voices with three different expressions are used as the target. Through statistical analyses of perceptual evaluations, we confirmed that the proposed morphing algorithm provides perceptual continuity of vocal timbre. Our results showed the following: i) gradual strengths in absolute evaluations, and ii) a perceptually linear strength provided by the calculation of corrected intervals of the morph ratio by the inverse (reciprocal) function of an equation that approximates the perceptual strength. Finally, we concluded that applying continuity was highly effective for achieving perceptual naturalness, judging from the results showing that iii) our gradual transformation method can perform well for perceived naturalness. ∗1 ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories ∗2 Nagoya University ∗3 ATR Media Information Science Laboratories † presently also affiliated with ATR Media Information Science Laboratories ‡ presently with National Institute of Information and Communication Technology/ATR Cognitive Information Science Laboratories ‡‡ presently with ATR Knowledge Science Laboratories

Real-time pitch modification system for speech and singing voice

A real-time pitch modification system has been developed. The implemented processing scheme is based on hybrid deterministic/stochastic decomposition of the signal and includes extraction of instantaneous pitch, pitch-synchronous time-frequency analysis, parametrical morphing and synthesis. The scheme provides high quality output with considerably high naturalness. The aim of the presentation i...

HandySinger: Expressive Singing Voice Morphing using Personified Hand-puppet Interface

The HandySinger system is a personified tool developed to naturally express a singing voice controlled by the gestures of a hand puppet. Assuming that a singing voice is a kind of musical expression, natural expressions of the singing voice are important for personification. We adopt a singing voice morphing algorithm that effectively smoothes out the strength of expressions delivered with a si...

Gradually changing expression of singing voice based on morphing

We have developed a method for synthesizing a singing voice by gradually changing the musical expression based on speech morphing. This paper shows the advantages of this method in comparison with the approach of binary discrete transformation between two expressions, confirmed by statistical analyses of perception tests. In order to synthesize different expressional strengths of a singing voic...

Procedure "senza vibrato": a key component for morphing singing

A procedure to remove vibrato from singing voice was proposed to enable auditory morphing between musical performances played under different conditions. Analyses of singing samples in the RWC music database using a speech analysis, modification and synthesis system STRAIGHT provided necessary information to implement “senza vibrato,” the procedure that removes vibrato. A preliminary subjective...
